Essential Lighting in Maya
Key Features
In this lighting tutorial for beginners we cover the basic concepts for getting started with lights in Maya, how to work with lights in the view port and aim spot lights. We go over the different light types available in Maya and show some practical examples of when to use which to mimic real world light sources.

Starting off with spot lights we cover drop off, cone and penumbra angles as well as customized throw patterns with barn doors and cookies. We look at common light attributes and how to select color and intensity for a light source, what light decay is and how it can be faked with intensity curves to speed up rendering times, as well as creating and editing color curves. You'll also learn how you can use light and shadow linking to get lights to interact with specific parts of a scene.

For shadows we look at the two different types raytraced and depth map shadows and how they differ, here you'll learn how to blur shadows and render with transparencies. We also look at the common attributes for Maya materials with specular and diffuse and how to use the IPR renderer for material tests. Finally we cover some simple light set ups with three-point lighting and integrating 3D objects onto 2D backgrounds by matching the lighting in our scene and casting shadows onto an image with the use background shader.
